Worst Weather in the World
Standing at the western edge of the summit plateau of Mount Washington, NH, Dave Glidden of the Mount Washington Observatory holds a three-cup anemometer to measure wind speed. The observatory has recorded a wind speeds as high as 231 mph, and instruments atop the mountain are checked hourly, year-round, requiring meteorologists to venture into the worst weather in the world to monitor the instruments.

Adirondack Dawn
At dawn on the Raquette River in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, Ken Allen rows the strip built Adirondack guide boat he just finished building the previous week. Allen restored two Adirondack guide boats that had been in his family for a century before building this one from scratch. He keeps the boats at the family's vacation home in Tupper Lake, New York.
